Phoenix Primary School recognises that Mathematics is both an essential learning area within school and a vital life skill applied in everyday situations. We are committed to delivering a high-quality Mathematics programs, aligned with the Western Australian Mathematics Curriculum, that provides students with a strong foundation for future learning and real-world application.

Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, we aim to deepen students’ mathematical understanding while developing fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. We strive to nurture confident, resilient learners who think critically, persevere through challenges, and actively apply their mathematical knowledge in meaningful contexts.

Our approach to the Mathematics curriculum is carefully designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts from the Early Years through to the end of Year 6. Across the school, we implement the Western Australian Curriculum and use a consistent gradual release model to support our whole-school approach to teaching and learning.

We draw on established mathematical theorists and current educational research to strengthen teacher subject knowledge and inform best practice in the classroom. Planned opportunities for review and retrieval are embedded within our programs to ensure students revisit and consolidate their learning over time. To meet the diverse needs of our learners, we utilise a range of evidence-based programs and strategies, ensuring all students are supported, challenged, and able to achieve success in Mathematics.

Through the teaching of Mathematics, we aim to nurture confident, capable learners who understand its relevance in everyday life. We promote curiosity, enquiry, and problem-solving, encouraging students to think logically, work systematically, and apply effective strategies across a range of contexts.
