Mindfulness

As part of Phoenix Primary Schools commitment to our students we have introduced whole school mindfulness education program which teaches students.  Each day after second break from 1:50-2:00pm each class participates in mindfulness practices. This can be done in a range of ways. We encourage students to develop their own way of being mindful as this helps it to become more of a routine for the students.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment, thought to create a feeling of calm. Cambridge Dictionary.

What are the benefits of mindfulness?

  • Mindfulness improves students’ ability to self-regulate, which then creates optimal conditions for learning.
  • Mindfulness teaches students to recognise and manage their emotions. This can lead to improved self-control, reduced impulsivity, and better responses to difficult situations.
  • By fostering a mindful attitude, students learn to cope with setbacks and challenges more effectively. This resilience is crucial for navigating both academic and personal difficulties.
  • Mindfulness can improve empathy and communication skills. When students practice being present and attentive, they are more likely to build positive relationships with peers and teachers.
  • Schools that embrace mindfulness often foster a more supportive and inclusive atmosphere. This can enhance overall school climate and contribute to a more positive and productive learning environment.

Mindful Education:

Mindfulness Education is completed within each classroom alongside our Health curriculum. This program provides a deeper understanding of how and why meditation works in the brain along with links to developing self-regulation. It allows students to learn about mindfulness in a hands-on way and equips them with the tools and knowledge about how they can use mindfulness at school and at home.

Mindful Me program:

Mindful Me is a program that is delivered to a small group of students each term. These students have been chosen by their teachers to participate in this program to support them in building skills and strategies when dealing with mild anxiety.

Mindful Me outcomes:

  1. Provide students will tools and strategies to help them deal with mild anxiety in the home and at school.
  2. Provide students with a theoretical understanding of brain science- focusing on the Amygdala, Prefrontal Cortex and Hippocampus.
  3. Ideas on hands-on activities that encourage and foster the development of self-regulation that students can use when needed.
